Seafood restaurant, Restaurant
This was my first time visiting Mike Linnig's even though it's been a Louisville staple for 99 years. We visited during a weekday off hour (3pm) so as to avoid large crowds. The restaurant had a Captain's Quarters type atmosphere. Our server was wonderful, the food was delicious, and the portions very generous. The only minus for me was they didn't have their famous turtle soup and they were also out of the entree I ordered.
Okay the first thing I want to say is I want to manage expectations here with this particular review. When we visited the restaurant we were visiting it for my wife's birthday we usually go to Joe's Crab shack in louisville. We are from Indianapolis so it's a good ride down to go.Someone had told us they had really good seafood here and we should try it.We arrived thinking we were going into an upscale restaurant that served more of a gourmet style seafood. Now this is not meant to be an insult. What we found was more of a drive-in type atmosphere where plastic silverware is used and things are served in paper trays and plates. Now that's not a bad thing if you're expecting it.The night we came down we went through an area that wasn't the best area in the world but once we got to the restaurant it was a nice area. The facility is very large I would say it's at least three acres and has a separate building for parties.Has a lot of outdoor dining for good weather even a two child's playgrounds and I really thought it looked really looked neat. One thing I would have done is not chose here for this particular tripp. It is definitely loved by the locals we got there it was not very packed but by the time 5:00 p.m.rolled around this place was solid with people.I do believe we hit it on a very off night.I wanted to try the turtle soup and it was not ready so I couldn't get any.The waiter was a nice guy but we barely saw him I asked him questions and never got answers he'd always go to look for him and never come back.We bought the most expensive thing on the menu we both bought a seafood dinner it was about $40 each and they contain a lot of fish nuggets to fish I believe they were perch or possibly cod.We got fish nuggets, we got hush puppies that were the size of baseballs. We received oyster and a couple of scallops. Now just going from there I say we hit it off tonight because this guy wasn't the best waiter and the whole order is deep fried one thing you need to know everything you get there is deep fried.Okay to start with the batter had not been season and it made everything very bland.Unfortunately it picked up all the taste of the oil in the oil taste like it hasn't been changed in a couple of years. When I set my fish to the side for more room in the plate I set them on a napkin that quickly turned a yellowish Brown from the oil being leeched out of the fish.Even when we took them home and put them in an air fryer we still got oil on the fryer. Now the onion rings were the biggest I've ever seen and I'm allergic to onions so I couldn't really eat them but my wife got this look like 2 lb oil-soaked pile of onion rings and they say they're legendary they were very soggy and the breading would not stay on to these for no amount of.Money.The oysters had a very rough life they were dark on the inside and were kind of chewy.Matter of fact most of the seafood order have been overcooked in a lot of it were very chewy.Unfortunately for us the two favorite platters were the fresh sliced tomatoes my wife got and I had a cup of pickles although I found it a bit unique that the cup I got was like a very large condiment cup with pickles in it that were just plain Dill sliced pickles I got charged almost $3 for the cup of pickles. The cottage cheese was very good and I believe the fish will you take the battery off of it and it's fresh it's probably a lot better.I thought the cocktail sauce was a bit heavy on the horseradish and I really couldn't eat that I like hot things but I don't like that.I thought the tartar sauce was okay but it wasn't anything I would write home about.Having said all that we kind of threw away most of our order when we got at home other than the fish fillet we tried to heat up in the air fryer.I will say this if you're looking for the drive-in sort of dinner this isn't bad and I'm sure there was other stuff that was a lot better I think they were being pushed because the amount of people and I think it was an off night.I do believe next year's birthday will return to Joe's Crab
Soup & Salad is surprisingly best value in my opinion! My husband loves the fried fish plate which is probably enough for 3 people, ~$24, but I prefer lighter options. The salad is huge and made with fresh field greens, fresh vegetables and cheese and itâs only $5.50.I got the soup of the day which was âkickin crab corn chowderâ which had great flavor and heat! ~$8.I tend to stay away because of price and seemingly low availability of fresh food and not fried, but was pleasantly surprised today.
