If you’re looking for a cool small bar spot to hang out, grab a cocktail and some apps this spot is interesting. However if you want some New Orleans style food, I’d unfortunately say this is not it. We went there to try their gumbo, in that big hunt for the perfect Nola spot, and this place just did not deliver.Their gumbo gravy/broth had a flavor and texture of the powdered brown gravy mix packets. The ingredients came off as super bland.Overall it was a disappointment and something I’d never get there again. One positive was their apps and cocktails.I had the chicken tenders with honey mustard sauce which was definitely solid. Also ordered their old fashion which tasted great. This is mainly why I’d say apps and drinks are good but beyond that it’s not a place to go for a real meal. Hopefully they can iterate a bit more on their Nola recipes, up level them to meet the standards of that fantastic creole cuisine but until then I’d recommend skipping.
Owner response
Hi Carl and thanks for the review.Glad you enjoyed the chicken tenders and cocktails but I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy the gumbo. For the record, both our chicken & andouille and seafood gumbos are homemade from scratch (including the roux) every day.We tend to be very consistent but sometimes there’s a little variance so it's possible that you were served from a less-than-100% delicious batch.I’ve certainly never had my gumbo called bland but then again everyone has their own definition of what that means. I did taste the gumbo right after your review posted, and it tasted spot-on, but not sure if you had visited the night before or that day. Also of note, a very spirit-forward beverage such as the old fashioned you enjoyed, could temporarily mute your palette so that subtle flavors might go missing. I mention all this to encourage y'all to try our gumbo again - I hate for y'all to miss out on how good it can be. We've been serving tons and tons of the stuff for over 21 years with lots of guests and employees who enjoy it regularly (it is one of our best-sellers, after all). I'll close by saying that all gumbo is different, and different people have their style preferences,. Some like it thin, some like it thick, some like a lighter roux, some a darker roux, some want it spicy, others not, some like more okra, some don't even put okra in it and use filé to help thicken it.I correlate gumbo to beer - it's all good, but I definitely subjectively prefer some beers more than others so I tend to buy those. If our gumbo isn't to your liking, I can also highly recommend our crawfish etouffée, red beans & rice, jambalaya, muffulettas, po'boys and fried seafood, all of which are key evaluators of a good Cajun/ New Orleans-themed restaurant like Cypress Grill and imo should count in a rating. In other words, I respectfully disagree with a 2 star rating based only on gumbo. Hope y'all will come visit us again soon and please ask for free samples of the gumbos, etouffée and red beans as they are available for sample any time we are open. Best regards, John Haug Owner Cypress Grill
I drove into Austin from Houston for the day and figured it was time to get some Cajun food so I stopped here. I'm sure glad I did.I ordered the Shrimp Poboy and a cup of Red Beans & Rice.I loved it all.The French bread was fresh, straight from Leidenheimer's Baking Co.in New Orleans. The shrimp was cooked perfectly and the dressings were fresh and crisp. As far as the red beans & rice is concerned, it was perfect as well. The service was spot on as well.I sat at the bar and the bartender was very friendly and attentive.I felt very welcomed.I will be back.
Been coming here a couple years with my husband and it’s our favorite Cajun rest in town! We love their Gumbo and amazing Po Boy’s sandwiches. The beers and drinks are also always on point. My only observation is that I don’t know why the lunch staff provides better service than other times at the day.We come pretty often here and been there in all shifts and definitely will always prefer going in at lunch.Otherwise, everything else is good and will always recommend to give it a try.
