Barbecue restaurant
I was here on business from Indianapolis and everyone told me to try Kansas City Bbq.When I checked into my hotel, asked for a recommendation and they suggested Gates.I wanted to taste a few different options but didn’t necessarily like the way the menu was set up, however they recommended I try a big plate. It came with 3 meats, fries and bread for $40 after tax.I thought the brisket was could have been a little more juicy. The ribs were pretty decent, although I’ve had better back in Indy, I must admit I accidentally bit my own finger while eating them. But I believe the star of this plate was the turkey. The turkey was amazing and I’m not a big turkey eater. In fact, I’m going to look into ordering some to have shipped for the holidays. It was full of flavor inside and out.
Straightforward restaurant if you are a local...Everybody else has to ask questions as it is unclear what meats are for sale besides ribs.Brisket, burnt ends, etc.are sold as sandwiches but this isn't clear. You just have to ask and hopefully you get a cashier who is willing to explain. The sauce is spicy and sweet which I love.If you really like spicy as for the house seasoning.
Let me start by saying that I had read some reviews about the service being terrible and that the people here were rude.It made me a bit hesitant, but I still wanted to try the food. When we got there yesterday, a woman was on her way out of the establishment yelling that the staff were racist and treated her terribly.I walked in with a blank slate because I didn't want anyone else's opinions to dictate my experience.I will say that the staff are straightforward and they're not going to treat you like you're special, but they were nice and patient with us and treated us like everyone else.I actually liked the experience. It didn't feel fake or pandering. The customers in line were so nice and helped us and we were laughing and having a good time. The food: I got a beef on bun with fries and the hot seasoning. Both the fries and beef on bun were incredible. The meat was smoky and tender and I loved the sauce. Not too much, not too little. The fries were thick cut and cooked to perfection.Crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. The seasoning was amazing. It had a hint of Cinnamon or nutmeg which I enjoyed very much. Not too spicy, just spicy enough.Salty and savory and it had a great flavor profile. We dined in and we were the only ones in the dining area.It had a very cool, swanky sort of prohibition vibe. The fans were all on pulleys which I thought was a very unique and interesting touch.Overall, a great experience.
