September 26, 2024I’ve been a regular customer of Wafu Asian Bistro throughout the pandemic, mainly ordering carryout with my daughter. From the very first order, the sushi impressed us with its freshness, and the unique roll combinations kept us coming back. Whether it’s their sushi or sashimi combo board, or the crunchy shrimp tempura, everything is packaged beautifully, with all the extras like chopsticks, wasabi, and sauces. When we finally dined in recently, the experience was just as good as the takeout – attentive service and a cozy, intimate ambiance.
The sushi and sashimi have been consistently top-notch, though I’ve noticed that the prices can feel a bit inflated for what you're getting, particularly with some of the fusion dishes. For example, while the tuna poke bowl was visually appealing, the cuts of fish were chewy, and the other ingredients, like the mango and avocado, didn’t hit the mark in terms of freshness. That said, the tom yum soup had a decent broth but lacked in terms of the quality of the chicken and vegetables.
Despite these occasional misses, Wafu has an interesting and expansive menu, all displayed on an iPad, which is both convenient and modern. However, I can see how some might prefer the traditional paper menus for easier navigation.
For those seeking reliable sushi in a trendy spot, Wafu is definitely worth a try. The decor, service, and atmosphere enhance the overall dining experience, even if a few dishes fall short. I will say, their cooked dishes like hibachi are great alternatives for non-sushi eaters, with flavors that are solid, if not spectacular.
Overall, I’ll keep coming back for the sushi, but I’m hoping for a bit more consistency across the rest of the menu.
