3/13/2024 Visit One of my fondest food memories is having Yassa Poulet for the first time, more than 20 years ago, in the home of a Senegalese friend in Brooklyn. It was tenderly stewed in a bright sauce of onions, mustard, vinegar + green olives, served over fluffy broken rice.It was a revelation! 😋🔥 I eventually had to learn to make Yassa myself. So, I was excited to find a Senegalese restaurant. Sadly, it didn't live up to my food memory, as the preparation was different. The chicken was grilled instead of stewed, and the onions were served on the side.So the meat wasn't tender + lacked the lemony-mustard flavor, which comes with marinating and/or stewing it in the sauce. I know every country makes Jollof rice differently (yes, the "Jollof Wars" are a whole valid thing!), but I'm accustomed to a spicier tomato-based Jollof + theirs tasted more like a fried rice. As a person of Caribbean descent, I can give them props on the plaintain, which were sweet + well-fried.
Authentic African Senegalese food in the heart of Detroit.Their FISH (red snapper) is to DIE FOR, literally some of the best fish I have had in the world bc of the spices they use.The onion sauce that comes with side of entree is also phenomenal and will make any food taste amazing.Plus it’s all halal!
My first time eating African food and I loved everything I had.More so the waitress was awesome helping me and my friend who flew in from FL because he seen a video about them go viral. The hidden gem is the juice they make. The berry mint and ginger juice were easily my favorite. The chicken had so much flavor and was juicy. The portion sizes were very large and even being full I wanted to keep eating because it tasted so good.Loved the fried plantains & both appetizers.A hole in the wall place that packs some serious flavor! Great place! ********UPDATE******************* Went back with some friends from FL and service was even better if I could give 10stars I would. The owner was there as well so we got a picture and even tried a new juice they make.
