The dining space is small, the neighborhood is questionable and parking is a bit janky. But with that said, the charm, coziness and customer service balanced things out. There was a host of items on the menu that were premade with pork, which was a little limiting. But I really enjoyed the BBQ shrimp pie which was simultaneously sweet and savory. My favorite of all the dishes tried. They have an interesting take on bread pudding, where they add apples.I wasn't a huge fan.But overall, the food and cocktails were good and the space was really inviting.
I ordered duck gumbo and asked multiple questions. What kind of duck? Is the sausage peeled? The manager did not know the answer to either question. The gumbo soup was bitter. The duck was chewy--normal.I informed Gabrielle I found the soup bitter. She did not respond to my query until I asked twice, and she said the roux is very dark but not burnt. If a gumbo tastes bitter the roux is burned. The bread and butter was delicious. The club soda was very refreshing, but the glass of Pinot Noir average. The menu changes daily or weekly; the staff was discussing the day's menu for a salad carefully.
Owner response
I never respond to these reviews, good or bad, but I can't let this one go.You are not telling the full experience. During your incessant inquisition of our menu, admittedly, I did not know the answer to "is your sausage peeled?" In the six years I've been working at this restaurant (16 years of my entire career), no one has ever asked me that question.I did have someone find out for you though! It is not peeled, in case anyone else is wondering. Half way through your bowl of gumbo you said to me "It might just be my taste buds or something I ate earlier, but I'm getting a bitter taste. But it could just be me!" To which I replied "Are you still enjoying it? Would you like me to switch it for something else?" And you told me "No, it could just be me or something I ate before coming here, that's why I didn't say anything before, but this tastes odd.I just thought someone with a more professional palate than mine should taste it and make sure." I said, "Ok I'll definitely let the kitchen know." Immediately after that interaction, I went to the kitchen and tried the gumbo myself, as did everyone back there, and we all agreed it was not bitter or burnt. When I walked back to the bar, you were still eating it, so I decided to leave it alone. After I cleared your empty bowl and gave you your check, that's when you asked me if I was able to try the gumbo.I told you yes, it tasted how it was supposed to taste. It's a very dark roux.I did not think it was burnt. You did not care for what you ordered. That's fine.I offered to get you something else. You declined and kept eating.I checked with the kitchen, like you asked. We didn't find a problem there.I'm not sure what else you wanted from me in this situation.A free bowl of gumbo? You ate the entire thing! As you were leaving you said word for word "what a charming restaurant, thank you!" I find it very odd when of people act sweet in person and then go behind a keyboard to say nasty things later."But that could just be me!" As for the Pinot Noir, we didn't make that.Au Bon Climat did.I guess Canada Dry is the only one who can get things right. -Gabrielle
What an incredible restaurant. I love the exterior vibe of the aesthetic.Inside, it felt very warm and cozy.Like your favorite neighborhood spot. The food here is insane.Everything I ordered tasted so fresh and you can tell they have amazing cooks here because the food was prepared so well. Don’t skip desserts when you visit. If they have the white chocolate pound cake, you must order it.
